Bench vises hold work firmly on a workbench for sawing, filing, drilling, bending and assembly. Mechanics, fabricators, machinists, plumbers and DIY users all rely on one. This collection includes mechanic's and swivel vises with anvils, machinist vises, quick release vises, and bench chain and yoke vises for pipe.

How to choose a bench vise

  • Jaw width: 4" to 5" vises suit home and light work. 6" to 8" vises like the MaxTools MBV-06 and MBV-08 hold larger parts for shop use, and the Jason GY250 is a 10" vise.
  • Body material: cast iron vises are fine for general work. Ductile iron and forged or all-steel vises, like the York ductile iron or S-Ks forged steel vise, take more clamping force and hammering.
  • Swivel base and anvil: a swivel base turns the work to a better angle, and an anvil gives a flat surface for light hammering.
  • Machinist or mechanic's vise: machinist vises like the Eron E-104 and E-108 hold parts square for drilling and milling. Mechanic's vises are built for heavier general work.

Mounting and care
