For Gila Salvador Arellano, the founder and CEO of Madhouse Design & Construction Studio, a space should never feel like just a space. The FounderFrom a bedroom to a landmark
Gila started her entrepreneurial journey remarkably young, launching her first ventures as a teenager and building Madhouse largely on her own through her early twenties — with no external funding, learning the business as she went. She often describes the studio's growth in versions, like software releases.
Version 1.0 was her bedroom, with nothing but a computer and an idea. Version 2.0 was a small printing shop selling tarpaulins and stickers. Then came a corporate office, then a building that has since become a dormitory for the team. Today, version 5.0 — a former restaurant space reimagined into the colorful, character-filled headquarters that greets clients now. Each iteration is a marker of how far the studio has come, and how deliberately it grew.

The StudioDesigns that solve
Madhouse Design & Construction Studio is a Metro Manila-based, end-to-end design-build firm known for a simple but powerful promise: designs that solve. Rather than treating design as decoration, the studio starts with the problem — a cramped condo, an awkward townhouse layout, a commercial space that needs to work harder — and engineers beauty around the solution.
What began as an interior design practice has grown into an integrated operation that takes projects from concept all the way to completion: architecture, interior design, ground-up construction, and fit-out, handled under one roof by a single collaborative team. Over the years, that team has grown to more than a hundred people across Gila's ventures, and the studio's work has earned a following in the hundreds of thousands online.

The PhilosophyHumans first, then the space
The idea that anchors every Madhouse project is deceptively simple. Before touching the space, the team studies the people who'll live in it — their routines, their wants, the way they actually move through a day. The design becomes an expression of those needs rather than a theme imposed on top of them.
It's a philosophy that traces back to Gila's earliest work, when a family of five living in a tiny studio taught her that a home isn't a temporary space to be endured. The question she still asks at the start of every project is the one that defines the studio:

Giving BackBeyond the Build
Perhaps the most telling part of Gila's story is what she chose to do with everything she learned. Instead of guarding it, she and her husband and COO, Iñigo, built Beyond the Build — a masterclass and podcast created to help other builders become better builders.
Her reasoning is generous and clear-eyed: no single studio can build every home in the Philippines, so lifting up the wider community isn't competition, it's collaboration. The masterclass runs a few times a year for founders and builders ready to hear hard truths about their businesses; the podcast is open to anyone, anytime.
