Powerhouse Tools: The Only Franchiseable Hardware Brand in the Philippines
We sit down with Charles Sy, CEO of Powerhouse Philippines, to unpack the 80-year Hapsuy legacy, the franchise model behind 150+ stores nationwide, and the bet on welding that no other premium tool brand in the country was willing to make.

Most tool brands in the Philippines are imported. A handful are locally distributed. But only one — Powerhouse Tools — has built a true franchise network of more than 150 stores across the Philippines.
In the launch episode of our Brand Insider Series, hosts Sophia Panlilio and tool expert Abbi Butacan sit down with Charles Sy, CEO of Powerhouse Philippines and third-generation steward of Hapsuy — the hardware distributor that built the Powerhouse brand. This is the story of how a small storefront in post-war Manila became a nationwide hardware empire, and why Powerhouse owns the welding category in the Philippines.
From Post-War Manila to a Nationwide Brand: The Hapsuy Story

Charles Sy's grandfather founded Hapsuy in 1946 — the year after World War II. Manila was in ruins, and the opportunity was anything but obvious.
"It was a chaotic city after World War II. So they started thinking of what they could offer to rebuild the city again."
Eight decades later, Hapsuy is celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2026, having grown from a single storefront into one of the most established hardware distributors in the country. Charles joined the family business 17 years ago, starting in the bodega picking orders — because his father insisted he learn the products before anything else.
"If you don't know the product, definitely you cannot go into hardware."
Why Powerhouse Was Born
For years, Hapsuy distributed multinational tool brands across the Philippines. But Charles kept noticing the same gap in the market:
- Incomplete assortments — global brands carried what was strategic worldwide, not what Filipino contractors actually needed.
- Premium pricing that locked out a huge segment of the local market.
- No category ownership in welding — most premium brands focused only on drills, grinders, and saws.
Powerhouse was created to close that gap. The philosophy is simple: US-designed, built for the Filipino market, with quality at par with multinational brands — but at a price that fits real budgets. The name itself was chosen to signal something strong, sturdy, and built to last. Matibay, as Charles puts it.
The Franchise Model: Why It Works in the Philippines
Powerhouse is the only franchiseable tool brand in the Philippines, with 150+ stores nationwide. So why has no one else done it? Because entering the hardware business is genuinely hard — new entrepreneurs don't know which products to stock, which suppliers to trust, or what price points actually move in their area.
Powerhouse solves all of that. A franchisee gets:
- A complete product assortment from day one
- Full training — products, repairs, after-sales service, and selling
- Flexible payment and credit terms through an inventory financing program
- A protected territory via the Market Development Plan (MDP)
Who Makes a Great Powerhouse Franchisee?
There's no fixed profile. OFWs, first-time entrepreneurs, and existing business owners all qualify. What matters is commitment:
"Even if you say, 'I have the money, I can invest' — if there's no time and effort to work on the business, it will fail. What we want is a partnership, not a one-time transaction."
The biggest mistake first-year franchisees make? Leaving the business entirely to their staff. As the owner, you have to know the business inside and out.
How the MDP Protects Franchisees from Cannibalization
The Market Development Plan (MDP) sets a minimum distance between stores, with location and foot-traffic analysis done before any new branch is approved. Charles personally signs off on site selection — because the franchisee's investment is Powerhouse's responsibility too.
The Welding Bet: A Category Powerhouse Owns

While most premium tool brands in the Philippines focus on drills, grinders, and saws, Powerhouse made a deliberate bet on welding. The category now spans the full range:
- MMA welders — led by the bestselling Sparks Series
- MIG welders — both gas and gasless MIG
- TIG welders
- AC/DC machines — which most other brands won't even carry
- Industrial-grade welders like the Evo Pro MIG, available for under ₱20,000
Powerhouse was one of the first brands in the Philippines to bring gasless MIG welding to consumers — a technology that made MIG far more accessible to small fabrication shops and DIY users who didn't want the hassle of a gas tank.
The #1 Mistake Filipino Buyers Make When Choosing a Welder
Charles's answer is blunt: they always ask for the price first.
The smarter question is about specifications and longevity. A cheap ₱3,500 welder that fails after a few months and gets replaced twice ends up costing ₱7,000 — more than the ₱4,500 unit that would have lasted for years.
"Affordability doesn't mean cheap. It's about how long you'll use it, and how many times you'll use it."
Real Buying Advice From the CEO

[00:00] Cold Open
Charles Sy: "We try to innovate hardware because there's nothing fancy in the hardware industry. Powerhouse — that story began with Hapsuy. Hapsuy has been in the industry for about eight decades. This year, we're celebrating our 80th anniversary. You can have the money to invest, but if there's no time and effort to work on the business, it will fail — and we don't want that, because what we want is a partnership."
[00:52] Introduction — Brand Insider Series Launch
Host: "Welcome back to Philippine Tool Talks, the podcast where we talk about the brands, the tools, and the stories shaping the Philippine construction and trades industry. I'm Abbi. And I'm Sophia. Today we're kicking off our Brand Insider Series, where we sit down with the people behind the leading tool brands in the Philippines. Powerhouse Tools is the only franchiseable tool brand in the Philippines, with over 150 stores nationwide — built in just a few short years. Joining us is Charles Sy, CEO of Powerhouse Philippines."
[01:34] Meet Charles Sy — 17 Years in the Industry
Charles Sy: "I've been with our company for 17 years. I started in the bodega, picking orders. The most important thing in hardware is the products you're going to offer. My dad wanted me to learn the products and their applications first — because if you don't know the product, you cannot go into hardware."
[02:50] The Hapsuy Story: 80 Years Since 1946
Charles Sy: "Hapsuy has been in the industry for 80 years — about eight decades. My grandfather started the business in 1946, just after World War II, with a very small hardware store. The city was chaotic after the war, so they thought about what they could offer to help rebuild it. It was a wreck, but it was also a great opportunity, because the city was rebuilding and developing."
[04:36] Rebuilding Manila & Finding the Niche
Charles Sy: "When I joined the company, we'd been distributing multinational brands all over the Philippines. We found a niche — these brands weren't offering complete assortments. Power tools, generators, welding machines. When you construct a house, we wanted to offer the complete set of tools you'd use to build it."
[05:38] The Story Behind the Powerhouse Name
Charles Sy: "We wanted something synonymous with strong, sturdy products. That's why we chose 'Powerhouse.' There were a lot of names that came to mind, but this was the one that really complemented the products we were bringing in."
[06:37] US-Designed, Built for the Filipino Market
Charles Sy: "Powerhouse is US-designed and exclusively distributed by Hapsuy. We wanted to distribute products of our own with quality almost at par with the multinational brands — but at an affordable price. Number one is the price point: you can't be as high as the multinational brands. Powerhouse caters to everyone looking for quality products at a price that fits their budget."
[08:19] Why Franchising — And Why No One Else Did It
Charles Sy: "The hard part for entrepreneurs is knowing what products to put under the brand. They don't know what products, what suppliers, or what price points. With Powerhouse, it's easier — low capitalization and a complete assortment, ready to market in their area."
[09:53] What Makes a Great Powerhouse Franchisee
Charles Sy: "There's no limitation on the type of person — OFW, first-time entrepreneur, anyone is a candidate. The most important thing when we screen is: how passionate are you about your work? Are you willing to take the extra mile? Even if you have the money, if there's no time and effort, it will fail. We want a partnership, not a one-time transaction."
[11:09] Training & Commitment
Charles Sy: "We provide all the training they need — repairs, after-sales service, selling the products, and how to run the business. But you really have to put your heart into the work for it to be successful."
[11:59] The Biggest First-Year Mistake
Charles Sy: "The mistake is that they just leave it to their people. As the owner and franchisee, you have to check. You have to know the business ins and outs. You cannot delegate things you don't even know how to run."
[12:30] Investment Range & Flexible Payment Terms
Charles Sy: "It's not really high capitalization. The biggest cost is the inventory financing program for the products — and the fees for entering the hardware industry are very low. We offer credit terms for franchisees as well."
[13:41] How the MDP Protects Franchisees
Charles Sy: "We created the Market Development Plan (MDP) to avoid cannibalization. There's a certain distance requirement between stores. The Philippines is very big, so it's not really an issue — and surprisingly, there's a lot of growth even in nearby areas."
[15:00] Strategic Locations
Charles Sy: "We have to choose a very good location — location and visibility are very important. When it comes to site selection, I tell them to let me approve it. We check the area because we want to avoid low foot traffic. The franchisee's investment is our responsibility too."
[15:58] The Welding Bet — Why Powerhouse Owns This Category
Charles Sy: "One category Powerhouse owns in the Philippines — that the global business won't touch — is welding. We saw the niche market for welding. Most premium brands focus on drills, grinders, and saws. We started studying and doing R&D on welding — from MIG to TIG, AC/DC, high-end MIG, and MMA. A very vast range."
[17:01] The Kabakal Line & Market Segments
Charles Sy: "In the Philippines there are different segments — DIY, contractor, and industrial level. We're always listening to our market."
[17:33] First to Push Gasless MIG
Charles Sy: "We were one of the first to bring in gasless MIG welding, and we also carry AC/DC machines that other brands don't even carry. We saw that product and were amazed by it. The MMA welder — the Sparks Series — is very easy to use, and it's our bestselling Powerhouse welder of all time."
[18:52] The #1 Mistake Buyers Make
Charles Sy: "The biggest mistake is they always ask for price first. You have to probe and ask about the features. These products aren't cheap — you're talking thousands of pesos. That's hard-earned money and an investment. A cheaper welder that breaks and gets replaced twice ends up costing more. It's about specification over price."
[20:33] Affordability vs. Cheap
Charles Sy: "Affordability doesn't mean cheap. It's about how long you'll use it and how many times you'll use it — then price. If you buy a ₱3,500 unit and have to replace it, that's ₱7,000. You should have spent ₱4,000 once."
[21:07] What's Next for Powerhouse Welding
Charles Sy: "There's a lot planned for the welding categories. Technology changes every year — efficiency, power. We're excited about the new technology we can bring to the Philippines."
[22:04] Buying Advice — ₱20K Fabricator Budget
Charles Sy: "If you're a fabricator and this is your business, I'd recommend the Evo Pro MIG. It's very strong, long-lasting, industrial-level — and less than ₱20,000. It's also the product that doesn't get the love it deserves."
[22:56] Buying Advice — ₱50K Homeowner Budget
Charles Sy: "For a homeowner doing renovations, it would be a mix of cordless power tools — very convenient right now — and welding tools as well."
[23:30] Quick-Fire Round
MIG over stick or TIG. Gasless over gas-type MIG. Most underrated tool: the MIG/Evo Pro. Kabakal stands for Matibay. Most-asked franchise question: "How much is the investment?" Most-sold welder of all time: the Sparks Series. First product in a new store: gasless MIG. Tool he personally owns: a cordless drill. Most underrated tool in the market: the angle grinder. Tool every Filipino household should own: an impact drill.
[24:55] Message to Filipino Tradesmen & Entrepreneurs
Charles Sy: "Powerhouse offers a lot of products — look at the specifications over pricing so you won't be misguided. The quality we provide is something you won't have a problem with. Our goal is long-term."
[25:44] How to Open a Powerhouse Store
Charles Sy: "If you're interested, call us and we'll explain everything for you." Host: "If you're building, fabricating, fixing, or starting something — remember, the right tools change everything. Until the next episode, maging Powerhouse!"
