What Is an Angle Grinder? Uses, Discs & Safety for Filipino DIYers and Contractors
"Pang-welder lang ba 'yan?" It is one of the most common questions we hear at the store. The angle grinder is one of the most-used power tools in the Philippines, from home repairs to fabrication shops and construction sites. This guide explains what an angle grinder really does, the four discs you will use most, and the safety habits every user should have.

What Is an Angle Grinder?
An angle grinder is a handheld power tool with a motor that spins a round disc at very high speed. The disc sits at a right angle to the motor body, which is where the name comes from. Depending on the disc you attach, the same tool can cut steel bars, smooth welds, remove rust, or cut tiles and concrete.
So no, it is not only for welders. Homeowners use it for gates and grills, tile setters use it for ceramic and porcelain, fabricators use it for steel, and contractors use it on almost every jobsite.
One handle, many blades. You use one blade for meat and another for peeling vegetables. An angle grinder works the same way: the motor is the handle, and the disc is the blade. In short, hindi ang grinder ang nagdedesisyon kung ano ang kaya niya. Ang disc ang nagdedesisyon.
Why the 4-Inch Grinder Is the Most Common Size in the Philippines
Angle grinders are named by the disc size they take. The 4-inch (100mm) grinder is the everyday size here: light enough to use with one hand guiding and one hand holding the side handle, easy to find discs for in any hardware, and strong enough for most cutting and grinding jobs at home and on site. Larger 5" and 7" grinders exist for deeper cuts and heavy grinding, but most first-time buyers should start with a 4-inch.

Cutting Disc (Cut-Off Wheel)
Bakal · Rebar · SteelThin and flat. Made to slice straight through metal like rebar, angle bars, tubes and sheet. Cut with the edge only, never grind with the side of a thin cutting disc.

Welding · Edges · BurrsThick and tough, usually with a depressed centre. Used to grind down weld beads, bevel edges, and remove burrs after cutting.
Shop grinding discs →Flap Disc
Kalawang · Paint · Surface prepOverlapping abrasive flaps that grind and finish in one step. Ideal for removing rust and old paint before repainting, and for blending welds smooth. Lower grit (#36–#60) removes more, higher grit (#80–#120) leaves a smoother finish.
Megatools FDA Flap Disc 4" →Diamond Blade
Tiles · Concrete · StoneA steel disc with a diamond-coated rim. Segmented blades cut concrete and masonry fast; continuous or turbo rims give cleaner cuts on tiles.
Total Diamond Cut-Off Wheel 4" →Angle Grinder Safety Checklist: Bago Ka Mag-Start
An angle grinder spins its disc at over ten thousand RPM. A few simple habits prevent most accidents.
- Keep the guard on, always. Position it between you and the disc. It stops sparks and catches fragments if a disc breaks.
- Wear safety goggles and gloves. Add a face shield, ear protection and a dust mask for cutting concrete. Avoid loose sleeves. Shop safety goggles and work gloves.
- Use two hands. One on the body, one on the side handle, so you stay in control if the disc binds or kicks back.
- Match the RPM. Every disc is printed with a maximum RPM. It must be the same as or higher than the grinder's no-load speed, and the disc size must match the grinder.
- Unplug before changing discs. Or remove the battery on a cordless grinder. Never rely on the switch alone.
Which Disc Do I Need? Choose by Material
When buying, don't just look at the grinder. Ask yourself first: "Ano ba ang puputulin ko?" What you are working on tells you which disc to buy.
