Extension ladders slide out to reach roofs, ceilings, walls and tall structures, then retract for carrying and storage. Electricians, painters, roofers, maintenance crews and telco installers use them where an A-type ladder is not tall enough.

Set the base about one quarter of the working height away from the wall, extend at least three rungs past the landing, and make sure the rung locks are engaged. For lower jobs, an A-type ladder stands on its own, while a multi-purpose ladder works as both. See also fiberglass ladders and safety harnesses.
